- Shoot rolled, leaf sheath terete.

- Leaf blade 20-50 times longer than broad, leaf glabrous.

- No ligule, absent auricles.

- Height: 5-30 cm. Plant glabrous.

- Stem terete, leafy up to half-height, less than 1 mm broad.

- Leaves lower in rosette, all similar, linear, chanelled, progressively narrowed into a slender point. First leaf very short often with the tunics of the seed at the apex. Leaves narrow, lower 9 cm long, the upper much shorter. Sheath membranous or with membranous margins, without auricles.

- Inflorescence terminal branched. Flowers usually solitary with 2 bracteoles. Outer perianth segments (3-7 mm), longer than the fruit, narrow and acute with a white or greenish peduncle.

- Fruit: capsule ovoid, 3-angled, yellow-greenish or sometimes reddish, dry and dehiscent.

- Biological type: Annual.
