- Cotyledons elliptic or ovate, with a rounded tip, sessile
- Leaves entire, lanceolate, more or less dentate.
- Height: 10-45 cm.
- Stem erect, glabrous, often branched, with an extensive principal root.
- Leaves: the lower obovate, spatulate, petiolate, median leaves obtuse, dentate, sessile,half-amplexicaule.
- Flowers yellow in heads of 2 kinds: disk-florets with a flat tube ended with 4 or 5 teeth and the ray -florets ligulate. Involucral bracts nearly completely membranous.
- Fruits : 2 kinds of achenes. Outer achenes oblong, short, inner achenes oblong acuminate. Seeds sometimes with a little cylindrical membranous crown. Seeds of disk-florets with 6-10 ribs, cylindrical, 2 mm in diameter.
- Plant used as insecticide, antiseptic, to relieve stomach disorders, a vermifuge and a stimulant. Rare in crops.
